Concrete Jungle Wrap : Single & Video : Another in my set of quirky tracks. It’s about a kind of Hillbilly, Country, place/town, where in my head it’s similar to where the film Deliverance was made but with a cross reflection of Inner City life and the modern world of gangs, poor education, violence and apathy.
Most of the boys are called Jack and most of the girls are called Jill, they are a rough bunch of posers and they carry baseball bats around with them.
Concrete Jungle relates to the buildings and the town, the comprehensive line relates to the schools, and all the kids who think they are cool, however, really, they are not.
They go around in gangs of forty to fifty at a time wasting their time, and not using their brains. The song is also about control, hence the line ‘the thought Police will make you pay’.
If they were to use their brains the sun would come out, unfortunately, because they don’t bother to think or learn they live in the doldrums. Similar to the book called The Phantom tollbooth.
Basically, it’s about a bunch of simple funny folk who are wasting their lives bored, stuck, and going nowhere, this can only change if they start to use their brains and if they don’t start to listen or learn, then what will happen to them, is the question. The message in the song is the same could happen to you in life.
The style of the song is boogie-woogie with a country feel to the vocals, it is not dissimilar to the Only Fools and Horses theme in its style.
It is also very much quirky pop and quite a simple song, it works well to dance to, especially for line dancing and country dancing as can be seen in the video, which features cowboys and cowgirls as hillbillies at a barn dance, hoedown setting.
The video was great fun to make as we had hay bales, saddles, pitch forks and country outback props, including demijohns, supposedly moonshine, wanted posters plus we used general making merry shots with folk cheering.
I visualized the exterior shots like the Dueling banjos kind of look.
It also reminds me of the Woolpackers Hill Billy Rock song, a Hee haw, Yea haw hoedown.
Thanks for listening cotton pickers.

There’s a place up yonder on top of a hill
Where the boys play Jack and the girls play Jill
It’s a posers palace day and night
It’s the kind of place where you don’t, you don’t pick a fight
Cos if you hit somebody then they only hit back
Cos they’ve got three friends with a, with a baseball bat
Ohh oh ohh oh, it’s a concrete jungle wrap that’s what it is I said
Ohh oh ohhh oh, it’s a comprehensive wrap
Well me and the guys wandered through the town
Where the school’s a dump and the teachers a clown
And the only fifty things that were really cool
Were the forty-nine of us and, and the swimming pool
And in that town on the hill where it always rains
The sun would come out if they, if they used their brains
Ohh oh ohh oh, it’s a comprehensive wrap that’s what it is I said
Ohh oh ohhh oh, it’s a concrete jungle wrap
Ohh oh ohh oh, it’s a concrete jungle wrap that’s what it is I said
Ohh oh ohhh oh, it’s a comprehensive wrap
Well the kids then leave school and they look for a path
Here they start as a child and end up as a laugh
This is the place where you can’t run away
Cos the thought police guys, they will make you pay
And the one hard lesson that has to be learnt
Is to be a joke really, really must be earnt
Ohh oh ohh oh, it’s a comprehensive wrap, that’s what it is I said
Ohh oh ohhh oh, it’s a concrete jungle wrap
In that town on the hill with the funniest folk
Here they start as a child and end up as a joke
This is the place where they can’t run away
Cos the doldrum officer, will make you pay
So if you don’t start listening it could happen to you
You could end up here then, then what would you do
Ohh oh ohh oh, it’s a comprehensive wrap, that’s what it is I said
Ohh oh ohhh oh, it’s a concrete jungle wrap, that’s what it is I said
Ohh oh ohh oh, it’s a concrete jungle wrap, that’s what it is I said
Ohh oh ohhh oh, it’s a comprehensive wrap, so once more
If you don’t start learning it could happen to you
You could end up there then, then what would you do?
What would you do ?
